Physical Exams Q & A

What is a physical and why do I need one?

A physical is an examination performed by Dr. Butter that assesses your overall health by checking your weight, height, blood pressure, and more. People of all ages undergo physicals for school, work, and even sports.

Having regular physicals can help with early detection of health concerns and problems.

What are some reasons my doctor may schedule a physical?

While many people have physicals annually as part of their care routine, that’s not the only reason you may need a physical. Often, before students enroll in sports, the student may be required to complete a sports physical. Some jobs may stipulate you have one before you start working to make sure you’re healthy enough for the job. Babies, toddlers, and young children often have them annually to monitor their growth.

Dr. Butter may also have you undergo a physical before you have surgery. A pre-surgery physical can help make sure you’re healthy enough for surgery and aren't at risk for major complications.

Physicals are an excellent way for Dr. Butter to assess your overall health and keep an eye on any health concerns.

How should I prepare for a physical?

Preparing for a physical can sometimes be stressful, no matter your age or reason you’re having one. Though there is nothing specific you need to do to prepare for your appointment, it’s a good idea to be ready for any questions Dr. Butter may ask.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for your physical:

  • Make a list of all medications you’re on and their dosages. You may also want to note if it’s prescribed and who prescribed it.

  • Write down a list of questions and concerns to discuss with your doctor. A physical is a good time to talk to Dr. Butter about any issues you’re experiencing or concerns you have. Preparing by writing questions down beforehand will help ensure you don’t forget to mention anything.

  • If you’re nervous about remembering what you and your doctor talk about during your exam, be sure to bring something to write with, or a phone you can type notes on.

  • If you’re visiting Dr. Butter for the first time, be sure to write down your family history and any allergies you have. Again, this can help ensure you don’t forget to mention any vital information.
