Allergy and Asthma Q & A

What are common allergens?

Allergies can cause a variety of annoying or disruptive symptoms like wheezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and more. The most common allergens include:

  • Dust

  • Mold

  • Pollen

  • Food allergies

  • Latex

  • Pet dander

  • Medications

How are allergies diagnosed?

Dr. Butter performs a series of routine allergy tests and goes over your medical history to accurately pinpoint the specific allergens that may be disrupting your life. The most common allergy tests include:

  • IgE tests: These IgE tests are used to find the IgE antibodies produced by your body for specific antigens that trigger allergies.

  • Skin tests: This is one of the most commonly heard of and used allergy tests. Through various methods, Dr. Butter can help to expose areas of the skin to tiny amounts of different allergens. The skin can react to identify which allergens produce an allergic reaction.

  • Process of elimination: By eliminating certain foods or environmental factors, and then re-introducing you to them, you and Dr. Butter can help to monitor and determine which elements are triggers for you.

What are the treatment options for allergies?

Dr. Butter will work with you to determine the best course of treatment based on the allergens presented, lifestyle, overall health and the severity of the allergic reaction.

Most allergies can be treated by over-the-counter medications, protective measures, or lifestyle changes. More severe allergies may require an EpiPen. Dr. Butter is happy to help.

What are the common causes of asthma?

Asthma can be genetic or develop over time. Based on the severity of your asthma and your family history, Dr. Butter will work to develop the best treatment plan.

Some people also develop allergy-induced asthma — sometimes called allergic asthma. With similar symptoms of asthma, allergic asthma is brought on by exposure to an allergen that you breathe in, such as pollen or dust.

What are the treatment options for asthma?

Inhalers, nebulizers, and other advanced medications treating asthma that can be inhaled as-needed or daily or weekly treatments may be necessary. Dr. Butter will work to find the best treatment plan for you.

Dr. Butter develops a custom plan for you and your body to help relieve symptoms so that you can get back to living your life. If you have a history of allergies or asthma, call or book online to schedule an appointment with Dr. Butter at Colonnades Family Medicine& Aesthetics to find out what treatment options are available for your lifestyle.
